3D Printed Punctal Plugs for Controlled Ocular Drug Delivery

Researchers at FabRx, the UCL School of Pharmacy and Universidade de Santiago de Compostela Departamento de Farmacología recently published a research article describing the development of dexamethasone-loaded punctal plugs using digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing.

Dry eye disease is a debilitating ocular disorder that effects millions world wide. Treatments often involve the topical delivery of drugs using eye drops. These are limited because of poor ocular bioavailability of topically applied formulations. Punctal plugs can also be used in addition to prevent tear drainage. This study combined these treatments using DLP 3D printing to improve the effectiveness of punctal plugs by incorporating drug loading with controlled delivery.
